Minors Baseball

Minors Baseball is for boys and girls who want to learn the fundamentals of hitting and fielding.  Players pitch in Minors.  Rules of the game are modified to to accommodate the need for teaching.  The primary goals of Minors are to instruct children in the fundamentals of baseball and to allow them to experience the value of teamwork.

Ages:  Players age 7 through 11 as of April 30 of the current season may play Minors.  Players age 12 as of April 30 may play Minors with League approval.

Fees: The League charges $90 to play Minors.  The League charges a $150 maximum per family. Scholarships are available to families in need.  Contact the League President or Player Agent for information on scholarships.

Volunteers: Parents are strongly encouraged to become involved in this introductory level of Little League.  After completing a Little League volunteer application and passing a required national background check, parents may become involved in practices, and be eligible as coaches, managers, umpires, local league board members and other volunteer positions within the league.

Team Formation: Minors teams have approximately 12 players.  The  League groups children according to neighborhoods, schools, and parent preferences, while attempting to ensure a competitive balance among the teams.  We do our best to honor parent preferences, but cannot make any guarantees.

Uniforms: The League provides each player with a team hat and jersey.  Players must provide their own pants and cleats.  At the end of the season, players may keep their hats, but must return their jerseys.

Equipment:  Players are encouraged to bring their own glove to practice and games.  The League provides each team with bats, balls and helmets.  Players may also bring their own.

Practices: Teams may begin practicing in about mid-March.  How often a team practices is up to the manager.  Minors teams generally practice about 2 times per week until the regular season begins in early April.  After the regular season begins, team coaches determine the frequency of practices.

Games:  Minors teams play 2 games per week.  Weekday games generally begin at 6:00 pm. Saturday games are scheduled throughout the day.  Games are scheduled from early April through mid-June.  Games are limited to 2 hours.  Games are played at Brooklyn Park and Essex Field.  In late March the official schedule will be distributed by coaches.

9-10 Year Old Division Tournament (All Stars):  The objective of the 9-10 Year Old Division Tournament is to provide 9 and 10 year old players the opportunity to participate in a baseball tournament at the District, Sectional and State levels at the end of the regular season.  Leagues may place a maximum of 14 players on the All Stars team.  To be eligible for play, a player must meet Little League’s “Residency Eligibility Requirement” and have participated in at least 60% of the regular season games as of June 15.  Powell Little League announces its All Stars team on about June 15.  Practices and games generally take place from mid-June into early July, but may continue if the team advances beyond district play.  The culmination of the Tournament is the Oregon State Little League Baseball Tournament, featuring teams from around Oregon.

District #2 Honors Tournament: All minors players not selected to the All Stars team are eligible to play in the District #2 Honors Tournament which runs concurrently to the All Stars tournament.

Rules: Minors follows the Little League Baseball Official Regulations and Playing Rules.  The diamond used is a 60-foot diamond and the pitching distance is 46 feet.  Stealing is allowed once the ball passes the plate.
